Swim: The swim takes place in the placid waters of the Red Sea. The temperature of the water in January is mild (20-22c) yet the swim is wet-suit legal. The course is in the bay parallel to the coastline and consists of four out and back loops for the full Ironman and two for the 1/2. Don't forget to catch a glimpse of the beautiful fish as you swim over the coral reefs.
Bike:The bike is definitely the most challenging and unique aspect of the Israman. It begins with a steep 15 kilometer climb from Eilat into the mountains, going from sea level to 700 meters above sea level. The remainder of the ride takes place in the rolling hills of the mountains that overlook Eilat and the Arava valley, a region known for heavy gusts of winds that can reach up to 60 kilometers per hour, though the average is 35-40 kilometers.
The return from the turnaround point is known to be one of the most challenging aspects of the course. The full Ironman goes out to the 80 km point, turns around, rides 19 kilometers back (southward) and then turns around again, returns to the 80 km point (now the 118k point), and then rides 62k back to the point where the 18k climb ended. The 1/2 Ironman participants turn around at the 54 kilometer point and then ride the 36 kilometers back to where the 18k climb ended.
Run: The run begins on the top of the mountain and descends down to Eilat. The first 15 kilometers are a steep downhill, a run that can be tough on the quads but can also produce extremely fast times. Don't forget to look up while running, to catch the incredible views of the Red Sea and the Eilat harbor. Once in Eilat, the course is flat. After 18 kilometers the two races split.
Those participating in the full Ironman will run 4 laps (2 back and forth) on a strip of 5 kilometers, partially paved with asphalt. Then they will head with final 3 kilometers to the Finish Line at the Sheraton Hotel.
Those participating in the 1/2 run an additional 3 km before returning to the same Finish Line at the Sheraton Hotel.
